Back in the 1990s,two iconic short haircuts – the pixie and the bob –morphed together and had a “baby”,which we now know as the bixie. The 2022 take is a shaggy bob with a mix of layers to add texture and dimension. Slick it back with a flip at the nape of the neck or wear it all shaggy with texture. Or try the poker-straight version with a smooth blow-dry and then use a curling iron to give it polish. Finish with a shot of hairspray for staying power;tryL’Oréal Paris Elnett hairspray (from Priceline,$11). Flipping the ends is also a great way to hide split ends. SprayDavines Oi All in One Milk (from Oz Hair and Beauty,$29) on the ends and style the flip with a curling iron.
Bang bang,you’re alive
Fringes rule:from the bottle neck (the reworked curtain fringe, short between the brows graduating to a curtain sweep) to bowl cut and curly bouncy fringes. We are loving Dua Lipa’s blunt version. If you want a new cut,but aren’t keen on losing your long hair, try the full-fringe shag. This is genius (and not only because I am a convert):keep the length of your hair while you play with a witty fringe. Try wearing your hair up while having the fringe frame your face.
Tendril braids
Loving this trend because it’s easy-peasy:tendril braids that frame the face and add a pretty detail. Just take a front section of hair either side (works equally with or without a fringe) and do a simple undone plait.
The modern beehive
This 2022 take on the classic ’60s beehive is all sexy and tousled. Get the look by backcombing your hair with a teasing comb, then pull it into a French twist and use bobby pins (remember them?) to anchor it. Leave some wispy layers to frame the face.
Spring hair revive
The fresh, new colour palette features copper, cinnamon, grunge and balayage, bronde, peaches and cream, duck egg blue (colourist Damien Rayner recommends having it placed through balayaged ends). Care factor:useOlaplex Bond No. 4 and No. 5 Bundle (from Adore Beauty,$97) to help prevent damage.
Caramel highlights
Golden caramel highlights, like those actor Olivia Wilde is sporting, instantly lift the hair mood. If your natural base is medium brown, all you need to do is add “babylights”. New York-based colourist Felicia Dosso says:“Babylights are very finely woven highlights that will add the perfect amount of subtle dimension to your hair.”
Double-processed colour
Platinum blonde requires a double-process method. First,a lightener is applied all over the hair and processed to straw yellow. The second step involves applying a gloss and toner to refine the tone of the raw bleach to
a perfect blonde. If you want to experiment with new colour – such as our current obsession, duck egg blue – try it on the ends of your hair just before getting a big haircut,so you can see if it works.
Chocolate cherry
This is based on warm highlights of rose, red and coppers, boosted by a very rich nutty brown as the base colour. It’s basically a rich brunette with ribbons of red. Just think Cherry Ripe.
Sandy blonde
The ’60s and ’70s are also reference points for darker, smudged sandy blondes, such as Taylor Swift. If you have lighter hair, keeping gold highlights makes transitioning back to that super-bright blonde easier if you miss it too much.
Hair rehab
The most beautiful hair is healthy hair,so keep yours in salon-worthy condition withGisou Honey Infused Hair Oil (from MECCA,$38).
