“I’m extremely confident[it can be turned around]. That’s my job.”

Demetriou only last year signed a contract extension until the end of 2026.

His team were never in the fight against their oldest enemy, celebrating Jared Warea-Hargreaves’ 300th NRL match, who sprung to an 18-0 half-time lead thanks to a Sam Walker double and then celebrated as Joseph Manu and James Tedesco both crossed twice after the break.

Mitchell was sin-binned for a professional foul as he tangled with Tedesco trying to shepherd a ball dead. He then accidentally stomped on the Australian and NSW captain while off balance and falling to the ground.

The Roosters piled on two quick tries while Mitchell was off the field and added another for good measure when he returned for the final six minutes.

The desperate Rabbitohs will play the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium on Good Friday.

“I’ve got a lot of trust in this group,” Demetriou said. “They’re a great group. They care about each other and that’s probably our biggest problem at the moment. We don’t want to be in the position we’re in. We’ve got to accept our reality and fight our way out of it. I know we will get out of it.

Asked about the scrutiny,Demetriou said:“That’s the privilege of being at this footy club. It’s a big club. I’m the head coach and I’ll wear that. That’s no problem. The noise is there because we’re not winning.

“I’ve got no doubt[I can turn it around]. The only thing that’s going to make a difference is getting our training right and getting some results on the board.”

Demetriou said he disagreed with the decision to sin-bin Mitchell, but admitted it didn’t have a bearing on the result with the Roosters cruising at 30-6.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson said he was proud of the way his side honoured Warea-Hargreaves in his milestone match.

“You can sometimes rely on that and[think],‘that will be enough’,” Robinson said. “But if that’s all you focus on,then the air will go out of it pretty quickly. The footy has to be the foundation and you have to tap into that at different moments. He’s honoured the front-rower code for 300 games.”

Walker didn’t finish the match after being sent for a head injury assessment and deemed to be suffering category one symptoms.

Waerea-Hargreaves honoured for 300th match

There’s a nice little presentation for Jared Waerea-Hargreaves’ 300th NRL match on the field too. NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo is doing the honours. What a warrior the Roosters prop has been. South Sydney’s players have stayed on the field, too, with Latrell Mitchell offering a nice round of applause.

Stats that matter

The stats don’t read anywhere near as badly as the scoreboard does for South Sydney.

How long will they take to get over this? They’ve got the Bulldogs on Good Friday as they search for their first win of the season. It seems a long, long way away at the moment.

Full time:Roosters 48 Rabbitohs 6

I think it’s fair to say the Rabbitohs are officially in crisis after three losses from three games to start the year. And an absolute humiliation at the hands of their greatest rivals. Ouch.

Latrell Mitchell sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul. It couldn’t really get much worse.

And what do you say about Jason Demetriou? If the coach wasn’t already feeling the heat, the next week will be an altogether different experience.

Just where do the pride of the league go from here?

Try:Tedesco gets his second

He waited a long time for his first,he’s not waiting long for his second.

This is just sheer want and determination as Angus Crichton pops an offload to Brandon Smith, who rifles a pass for the Roosters captain coming back on an angle near the posts and he manages to squeeze between Jacob Host,Cameron Murray and Cody Walker to score right under the black dot.

Joseph Suaalii has the simplest conversion.

Can they get 50 with only two minutes left?

By the way,37,594 at Allianz Stadium tonight. And maybe not a single Rabbitohs supporter left.

Mitchell returns from the sin-bin

He’s back on for the last five minutes.

Serious question:if you’re Jason Demetriou, why would you put him back out there? There’s only a risk of injury or Latrell losing his head again. I don’t know if I would have done that.

Anyway, let’s see what the final passages of this game have for us.

Try:Tedesco gets in on the act

Who’s about the only person not to score tonight? James Tedesco. Yeah,he was always going to change that.

With his rival fullback sitting in the sin-bin,the Australian and NSW captain is on the scoresheet as the Roosters strip the Rabbitohs for numbers down the right. Dom Young kicks back infield for his No.1,who toes it ahead himself and just manages to plant the ball down before the dead ball line.

Super stuff.

Can we officially call this a bloodbath now?

Joseph Suaalii maintains the Roosters’ kickers perfect record tonight with the conversion.

Look away now Rabbitohs fans. The only positive is there’s just six minutes left.

Try:Manu gets his second after Mitchell sin-bin

It just had to be,didn’t it?

It took all of 30 seconds after Latrell Mitchell left the field and the Rabbitohs were down to 12 men for the Roosters to capitalise.

This time it’s Joseph Manu getting his second try of the second half after some slick hands to the right. It’s just all too easy at the moment. Sandon Smith and Nat Butcher shovelled the ball quickly along the backline and Manu strolled over unimpeded.

Joseph Suaalii’s conversion attempt is good from near the touchline.

The pain for the Bunnies. Oh,the pain. And we’ve still got more than 13 minutes left.

Mitchell sent to the sin-bin

Latrell Mitchell has been sent to the sin-bin for foul play on James Tedesco. Wow.

He tries to shepherd a ball dead as Tedesco puts pressure on him. He’s grappling, gives him a little push and as the ball finally bounces out of play, with Tedesco sprawled on his back,Mitchell stamps on him and then drops a knee into his head. I can’t tell if there was any malice or intent in that all. It just looked like he was a little off balance. It had ro be accidental.

But the bunker has had a look at it and the Rabbitohs champion has been sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul in pushing Tedesco. Don’t the Roosters crowd love that?

It’s just going from bad to worse for South Sydney.

Bloodied Smith carries on

That’s probably the biggest damage thee Rabbitohs have inflicted on the Roosters tonight, with Brandon Smith sporting a nasty gash across his face. Almost his entire face is smeared in blood. He sees himself on the big screen. Guess what he does? Smiles. Why wouldn’t he when the scoreboard is next to his ugly mug?

They’ve patched him up and on he goes. He wouldn’t miss the rest of this for quids.
