Inmate found,arrested after alleged escape from Bathurst jail

An inmate has been found and arrested after allegedly escaping Bathurst jail on Tuesday while performing maintenance outside the grounds.

Alan Piper,61,had last been seen shortly after 11am at Bathurst Correctional Centre near the Mid-Western Highway in the NSW Central Tablelands.

Corrective Services NSW said he escaped around 11am “while performing external grounds maintenance”.

“The inmate was unaccounted for at the 11.30am muster,” a CSNSW spokeswoman said.

She said police were “immediately notified”. Piper,last seen wearing prison greens,was reported missing from the facility at about 12pm.

Officers from Chifley police district searched the area and an appeal for public assistance was made at 4pm.

Piper was described as being Caucasian in appearance and approximately 184 centimetres tall with a medium build,brown eyes,grey hair and an “unshaven” grey beard.

In an update on Tuesday night,police said he was found at 4.30pm “outside the gates to the correctional facility”.

“It is expected charges will be laid,” NSW Police said.
