A draft master plan for the site along the Brisbane River suggests the Piazza be demolished,with additions including a treetop walk,a more pedestrian-friendly Grey Street,and improved riverside paths and green space for its 14 million annual visitors.
The plans,open for public feedback until December 14,also suggest an upgraded Cultural Forecourt area and a “world-class” maritime precinct.
What was initially was announced by the state government and South Bank Corporation,which manages the site,to coincide with in 2018.
Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the beach,bougainvillea-lined arbour,rainforest and riverside greens would be “protected and celebrated”.
“The plan proposes more of what the community told us they love,” Miles said.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said more than 10,000 items of feedback had shaped the draft plan,making it a “plan by the people” for what she called “the People’s Park”.
Feedback on the plan will be open for six weeks,including pop-up community information sessions and. A final plan is expected by late 2023.
At an event to mark the milestone in South Bank on Wednesday,Miles told reporters that with the city undergoing rapid change,the site also needed to keep improving.
“South Bank was built well was ever thought of, was ever thought about,” he said.
“ here and,of course, that we will build at Roma Street and the — whatever it becomes in legacy mode.”
While not featured in the plan,Miles said the government intended to establish a in South Bank after more details were worked through.
