Perth cyclist dies after being ‘run down by suspected vigilante’

A 48-year-old Perth cyclist has died after allegedly being run down by a driver in a suspected act of vigilantism.

The incident occurred around 1.45pm on Friday when a Kia Carnival sedan collided with the cyclist at the corner of Lion Street and Jupiter Street in Carlisle.

WA Police major crime division detective inspector David Gorton said the cyclist was dragged for some distance after being struck. He died a short time later in hospital.

The 27-year-old male driver of the car has since been charged with murder.

“We just want to reiterate to members of the public that if you are a victim of crime,no matter how serious the incident is,we urge you to contact police if you feel that you need assistance,” Gorton said.

WA Police allege the driver and victim were not known to each other, and that they believed an incident the day before involving a ‘personal property item’ may be linked to the tragedy.

The driver was apprehended a short time after the incident after police received reports of a man driving erratically.

Passengers in the car are assisting police with their inquires.

The charged man will appear in court tomorrow.

After the death,9 News Perth spoke to a witness who said he had seen people doing CPR,with around six ambulances on the scene, describing it as a “hectic situation.”

Other witnesses said they saw a man being taken away by police.

Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain ongoing.
