But just two of them,,account for about US$2.3 billion of that. Dollars do not always make a winner on Globes night, but if you’re looking for clues you’d be a mug to ignore the sheer momentum behind the two biggest films of the year.
This is undoubtedly a storied year for the Globes: of negative headlines and internal reorganisation. The larger voter base incorporates more international film journalists and critics;the result is a nominee list that at times seems to more closely hew to the Oscars in tone and genre.
Three Australian actors have been nominated this year:Margot Robbie forBarbie,Sarah Snook for and Elizabeth Debicki forThe Crown. And Australian screenwriter Tony McNamara is nominated in the best screenplay category for.
Just on sheer numbers,Barbie andOppenheimer start the night with the best shot at victory.Barbie has nine nominations;Oppenheimer has eight.(seven nominations),Poor Things (seven) and(five) round out the five leading films in the pack.
In the television categories,Succession commands a clearer lead with nine nominations. and are close behind with five categories. The Crown, off the back of,has just four nominations.
Among the changes this year are the addition of awards for cinematic and box office achievement and performance by a stand-up comic on television. The former is a little odd because it is surely the ambition of every film, though the likely winner is,the highest-grossing concert film of all time.
And the latter is a little odd because of all the film and television disciplines excluded by the Globes, including cinematography, editing and production design,stand-up comedy is not something that feels in front of mind.
There are also two notable absences:the presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett awards, the event’s lifetime achievement awards for, respectively, film and television. The absence is not permanent, the event’s organisers said ahead of the telecast;the two awards will return at some point. Just not right at the moment.
This is not an exhaustive list of categories;. Rather, here is a breakdown of the battleground categories – where the toughest fights will be held to walk away with award season gold – and our prediction for who will likely win when the curtain goes up on Monday for.
Motion picture,drama
The nominees:Anatomy of a Fall,Oppenheimer,Killers of the Flower Moon,Maestro,Past Lives,Zone of Interest.
The likely winner:Oppenheimer.
A formidable category, but also one which reflects the new structure of the Globes’ voter base:a little less commercial,a little more academic. In the end, however,no competition can fight momentum, and behind it.
Motion picture,comedy or musical
The nominees:Air,American Fiction,Barbie,Poor Things,The Holdovers,May December.
The likely winner:Barbie.
Another busy category but one which has a little of the Globes old-fashioned shake, rattle and roll.May December has,to some extent, taken the focus for the moment but Mattel’s poster girl (coupled with Margot Robbie’s stunning star turn) is hard to argue with. This is another no-brainer.
Actor in a motion picture,drama
The nominees:Bradley Cooper (),Colman Domingo (Rustin),Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon),Barry Keoghan (Saltburn),Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer),Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers).
The likely winner:Bradley Cooper or Cillian Murphy.
One of the toughest categories of the night, packed with top-notch performances. It has to fall to Cooper or Murphy surely, but even with that in mind,Keoghan’s turn inis presently the talk of the town and Scott may be an outside runner in a race that loves to crown new talent.
Actress in a motion picture, comedy or musical
The nominees:Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple),Jennifer Lawrence (),Natalie Portman (May December),Alma Poysti (),Emma Stone (Poor Things),Margot Robbie (Barbie).
The likely winner Emma Stone or Margot Robbie.
A tough category, packed with plenty of diverting performances. Emma Stone was luminous inPoor Things, but Yorgos Lanthimos’ film (written by Aussie Tony McNamara) has a lot going on and Margot Robbie’s lighter, more whimsical turn asBarbie is an easier tick on the ballot form. Even then,Barrino or Portman could sideswipe the race, particularly Barrino, who seemed to pop in Blitz Bazawule’s glorious remake.
Director,motion picture
The nominees:Bradley Cooper (Maestro),Greta Gerwig (Barbie),Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things),Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer),Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon),Celine Song (Past Lives).
The likely winner:Christopher Nolan.
This is a category with a wide spread of talent and a group which is hard to pick frontrunners from. Gerwig’s Barbie was undoubtedly the fun film of the year, packed with colour and razzle-dazzle. Scorsese is hard to ignore too, even when the inclination is to crown a female director. But in the end,for sheer cinematic power,Nolan should emerge first among equals.
Television series,drama
The nominees:1923,The Crown,The Diplomat,The Last of Us,The Morning Show,Succession.
The likely winner:Succession.
While the movies tend to overshadow television shows at the Golden Globes, this is undoubtedly one of the toughest categories on the night.has Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren to kick it along, was one of the stunning hits of the year and the final season ofSuccession was brilliant. Onlyremains the dark horse in the race;Succession is surely the winner.
Television series,comedy or musical
The nominees:Abbott Elementary, Barry,The Bear,Jury Duty,Only Murders in the Building,Ted Lasso.
The likely winner:The Bear or.
This is a much wider field,in a race full of dark horses. The Bear just makes sense. It’s a solid performer and Jeremy Allen White is stunning in the lead. ButJury Duty genuinely popped. Its only handicap is a relatively low wattage platform (Amazon Freevee) in a competition where eyeballs can shape the race.
Performance in stand-up comedy on television
The nominees:Ricky Gervais (Ricky Gervais:Armageddon),Trevor Noah (Trevor Noah:Where Was I),Chris Rock (Selective Outrage),Amy Schumer (Amy Schumer:Emergency Contact),Wanda Sykes (I’m an Entertainer),Sarah Silverman (Someone You Love).
The likely winner:Ricky Gervais or Chris Rock.
It’s a tough call in a new category that seems only to exist as a curtsy by the Globes to the streaming industry (five of the six nominees are on Netflix) as a potential future broadcaster of the event. And despite Sykes’ magnificence,it feels like either Gervais,,or Rock, who deserves all the awards for his grace in the face of the slap heard around the world, will take home the win.
Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
The nominees:Barbie,Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3,Mission:Impossible:Dead Reckoning Part One,Oppenheimer,Spider-Man:Across the Spider-Verse,The Super Mario Bros Movie,John Wick:Chapter 4,Taylor Swift:The Eras Tour.
The likely winner:Taylor Swift:The Eras Tour.
A new category awkwardly shoehorned onto an awards show that already suffers from a little bit of category overkill, largely intended as a bit of kissy kissy for Hollywood’s old studio establishment who think somebody ought to win something for making a movie that movie-d better than the rest.
Motion Picture (non-English language)
The nominees:Anatomy of a Fall,Fallen Leaves,Io Capitano,Past Lives,Society of the Snow,The Zone of Interest.
The likely winner:Anatomy of a Fall.
The category that leans deepest into the heart of the Globes – a film awards night voted (in theory) by foreign-language speaking journalists – is the one that needs the smartest handling. There are a number of contenders, includingPast Lives, but there’s a lot of love for Justine Triet’s French courtroom drama about a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death.
Motion Picture (Animated)
The nominees:The Boy and the Heron,Elemental,Spider-Man:Across the Spider-Verse,The Super Mario Bros Movie,Suzume,Wish.
The likely winner:.
There would be something serendipitous, the film commissioned to mark the 100th anniversary of the iconic animation studio, but despite its sparkle it’s not the strongest contender. Whatever they are putting in the water at Sony, someone ought to bottle it:their Spider-Man movies are belting aces out of the court.
