Lisa Millar announced as new host of ABC News Breakfast

Lisa Millar will replaceABC News Breakfast presenter Virginia Trioli in August – while co-host Michael Rowland takes on an expanded role as senior network presenter.

Millar appeared on the debut episode ofNews Breakfast in 2008,in a live cross from Washington.

More recently,she has joined Rowland as a fill-in presenter.

Millar – who has helmed ABC's Washington and London bureaus in her 26-year career with the national broadcaster – starts her new role on August 19.

"I've been travelling quite a bit in regional Australia since I got back and people are always asking me about the Brekky team and whether everyone is as nice and friendly as they seem,"she said.

"The answer is a definite yes. And I can't wait to join them."

In addition to hisNews Breakfast role,Rowland will anchor coverage of major local and world events across ABC News programs,including the 7pm News – as he did this year with the Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi and the memorial service for former Labor prime minister Bob Hawke.

"I look forward to drawing on my experience as a foreign correspondent,and the dozens of on-location broadcasts I've hosted forNews Breakfast over the years,to bring to ABC audiences breaking stories from around Australia and around the world,"Rowland said.

Millar's journalism career began with a cadetship at Queensland'sThe Gympie Times, followed by a stint at Brisbane tabloidThe Sunand WIN TV in Townsville.

She joined the ABC in 1993 as North Queensland correspondent,before covering state and federal politics and hosting the Queensland edition ofStateline.

Between 2001 and 2005,Millar was a North America correspondent – and part of a team that won the 2005 Walkley Award for Investigative Journalism.

She later worked as North America bureau chief and London bureau chief.

Since returning to Australia last year,she has been a roving reporter and presenter for the ABC.

Trioli – who has been withNews Breakfast since 2008 – will finish on August 15.

Later this year,she will replace retiring ABC Radio Melbourne mornings host,Jon Faine.
