The top pop culture moments... and the gilded age comes to grim life

ByMeg Watson

Well, the red carpet is over, the celebs are locked inside and I assume everyone’s being forced to listen to Lin-Manuel Miranda rap about the industrial revolution.

From Kim Kardashian in Marilyn's dress to Lizzo and Blake Lively, here's some of who wore what on fashion's big night.

If you’re just coming to the blog now and wondering what you missed, the answer is Kim Kardashian. She completely eclipsed everyone by wearing the iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore when singing “Happy Birthday” to JFK. It’s an inspired choice and a pretty exhilarating moment in pop culture history that, truly,no one else could pull off.

The other talking points of the red carpet include a surprise cameo from Hillary Clinton (her first Met Gala appearance in 21 years),a huge entrance from Lizzo, and a deeply unsettling appearance from Amy Schumer in which she yelled about vibrators (I would explain this further if I could).

Sadly,Rihanna was a no-show but hey – there isfar more upsetting news in the world right now. In its final moments, the hype around the Met Gala was severely undercut withleaked news coming down the Supreme Court has privately voted to strike down Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that protects abortion rights.

There’s a real dissonance on people’s social media feeds right now between this and the light-hearted discussion of celebrity fashion and,to be honest,it’s surreally on brand for the “gilded age” theme.

Inside, the wealthy celebs are having a big beautiful party. Outside, everyone else is scrambling for their basic rights. Yikes.

Golden girls Cardi B,Megan Thee Stallion and Chloe Bailey

The shortcut to this year’s theme ofGilded Glamourwas wearing gold and it helped carry Cardi B,Megan Thee Stallion and Chloe Bailey to the finish line at this year’s Met Gala.

Cardi B arrived with Donatella Versace who designed the ’90s-inspired gown, dripping with Versace medallions.

Versace said that the dress was designed to accentuate the singer’s curvaceous figure.

Megan Thee Stallion joined the legion of guests dressed by Jeremy Scott for Moschino but rose above the pack in the gown with a generous slit in the skirt and metallic, feathered cap sleeves with a sheer bodice. “I feel like a phoenix,” she said.

Rounding out the modern dayGolden Girls was Chloe Bailey in a bulbous, asymmetrical couture dress from Area, designer by Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk.

If this was a remake of the ’80s sitcom, only the extrovert character Blanche would be able to carry off this boundary-pushing design.

Kim Kardashian ‘hasn’t eaten carbs and sugar for three weeks’

ByMeg Watson

Kim Kardashian explains her three-week diet so she could wear into Marilyn Monroe’s 'Happy Birthday,Mr President' dress to the Met Gala 2022.

Kim has spoken about the difficulty she had in fitting into Marilyn Monroe’s dress for the event. That shouldn’t come as a surprise – Monroe famously had to be sewn into the garment it’s so tight – but her descriptions of the effort it took are peak ’90s diet culture.

“I had to lose about 16 pounds (7.25 kilograms),” Kim told the red carpet hosts. “I haven’t eaten carbs and sugar in about three weeks.”

In anaccompanying interview with Vogue, she goes into more detail:“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day,run on the treadmill … and just eat the cleanest veggies and proteins. I didn’t starve myself, but it was so strict.“

“It was this or nothing.”

Jared Leto’s horror story

After the disappointing response to his latest filmMorbius,it’s understandable that actor Jared Leto can’t let go ofThe House of Gucci.

Famous for having carried a model of his own head down the red carpet for The Met Gala in 2019,this year Leto dressed in matching embellished cream suits with Gucci designer Alessandro Michele.

The twinning was carried out right down to the red bow ties, matching clutches and diamante hair clips.

The result has me thinking of another movie… perhaps a remake ofThe Shining Jared?

Social media detectives can pat themselves on the back, with Kim Kardashian arriving at the Met Gala in the dress Marilyn Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday Mr President” to US President Kennedy in 1962.

Kardashian’s followers guessed that the Jean Louis dress, based on a sketch by Bob Mackie, would be Kardashian’s choice after she visited Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum in Florida with boyfriend Pete Davidson, where it is usually on display.

“The idea really came to me after the gala in September last year. I thought to myself, what would I have done for the American theme if it had not been the Balenciaga look? What’s the most American thing you can think of? And that’s Marilyn Monroe,” Kardashian toldVogue.

The dress holds the record for the most expensive dress purchased at auction when it was bought by the Ripley’s museum for $US4.8 million ($5.8 million) in 2016.

No,sorry,Kim Kardashian isn’t here yet. But they are quickly rolling out the rest of the crew before the main event – and the reviews haven’t been kind.

Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian are wearing matching ripped up suits and skirts. As one fansaid,“it’s giving failed Pirates of the Caribbean vibes”.

And Kylie Jenner is inexplicably wearing a backwards cap and a wedding dress. She is yet to be interviewed by the red carpet hosts, but I can only assume these are a few of her influences.

I’m choosing to believe that Kim was involved in all these outfits. It’s the familial equivalent of dressing your bridesmaids in lime green spandex to make yourself look better.

Return of the OG supermodels

When you’re responsible for setting the trends of the ’90s and ’00s the Met Gala theme is optional.

Enduring supermodel Naomi Campbell wore a black Burberry dress by Italian designer Riccardo Tisci with diamante embellishments of the brand’s logo featuring a knight on a horse. The diamantes continued as face jewellery, with Campbell staring down the photographers on the red carpet.

Kate Moss also chose Burberry, with a trench coat-inspired black dress and the simple styling that has her occupying a permanent position on every designer’s mood board.

Puff Mumma,Gigi Hadid

Supermodel Gigi Hadid hinted at her Versace choice on Instagram last night with a quote from Donatella:“Fashion is about dreaming and making other people dream.”

With a train to rival Rihanna’s golden Guo Pei dress from the 2015 Met Gala,Hadid wore a burgundy puffer coat, featuring bell sleeves.

Beneath the coat,Hadid covered up in a leatherette catsuit with matching corset details. With her blonde hair slicked back Hadid was more warrior woman thanGilded Glamour but who was going to start that argument?

Lizzo is looking good as hell

ByMeg Watson

Lizzo is going to be extremely hot all night (in both senses of the word) because this coat is exquisite and apparently took 22,000 hours to make?

One week after her surprise performance at Coachella with Harry Styles, the star’s entrance was one of the most notable of the event so far.

She had a small entourage to carry her outfit behind her,she was wielding a flute and also definitely caused people in the surrounding area to go temporarily deaf due to all the screaming. Don’t press play on this video unless you have headphones in. It’s realInvasion of the Body Snatchers stuff.
