Decorating a room? Start by rugging up

A rug should come first when designing a room, says Olly Adam ofThe Green Room on Sydney’s Crown Street, and the man knows rugs. Adam ran his own company producing handmade rugs in the UK before working for British retailer The Rug Company.

“While it’s commonplace now,The Rug Company’s first collaborative creation was with fashion designer Paul Smith,” says Adam. “Swirl revolutionised the contemporary rug industry.”

More designer rugs with Vivienne Westwood and Diane von Furstenberg followed,as did collaborations such asTableau (pictured),with leading American interior designer Kelly Wearstler.

“Kelly has an amazing organic aesthetic, which lends itself incredibly well to rug designs,” says Adam. “It’s the sign of a truly great artist that the designs don’t age and some of her early rugs are still among today’s bestsellers.”

A blend of wool and silk,Tableau is inspired by street art and has a wandering pattern that provides fertile ground for building out the “vibe” of a room, according to Wearstler.

For Adam,a good rug is all about longevity. “Rugs are heirlooms,so I get huge satisfaction from helping people find something that they will love for a very long time.”
