According to the ABC,the incident report states the koala was spotted by a surveillance officer, who activated LED signs ordering drivers to stay in the left lane, and called wildlife rescue volunteers to urgently attend.
But as the video shows, those efforts were to no avail. A truck driver missed or ignored the signs and ran the koala down while overtaking another truck.
North East Forest Alliance spokesman Dailan Pugh said the footage of the"avoidable"death is a wake up call that current measures in place to protect the animals are not working.
"A lot more needs to be done to protect core koala habitat, and most importantly the linkages between them,"he said.
"We need to help koalas move between the small patches of good habitat that are left."
While the koala population north of Brunswick Heads is officially categorised as"endangered",Mr Pugh said the numbers in the Byron Bay area where this tunnel is located are low – around 240 koalas – and it's only a matter of time before they too are endangered unless serious action is taken.
