Zelensky posted a message to social media, accompanied by images of a train car with smashed windows, abandoned luggage and bodies lying in what looked like an outdoor waiting area.
“Lacking the strength and courage to stand up to us on the battlefield, they are cynically destroying the civilian population,” Zelensky said.
“This is an evil that has no limits. And if it is not punished,it will never stop.”
Zelenskiy later said in a video address to Finland’s parliament that no Ukrainian troops had been at the station at the time of the attack.
Russia’s defence ministry denied that Russian forces were responsible for the attack. Russian state media on Friday was broadcasting the story, saying the attack had been staged by Ukraine.
The head of Ukraine’s railways,Olexander Kamyshin, said on the messaging app Telegram that the station in the Donetsk region was being used to evacuate civilians from areas under bombardment. He said at least two children were among the dead.
