Sydney Airport staff are handing out water bottles, free coffee vouchers and Easter eggs to waiting travellers.
The airport provided an update on social media just before 8am asking domestic travellers to arrive at least two hours before their flights.
“Queues are long at domestic terminals but moving well. Most passengers clearing check-in and security within one hour. Queues expected to ease towards midday and peak again into the afternoon,” the update read. “Thanks for your patience and have a good flight.”
The delays are a result of major staff shortages. Nine News reported that about 100 staff members from Qantas head office have been brought in to work at both the Qantas and Jetstar terminals to help passengers check in.
This week, the state government added essential air transportation staff to the list of critical workers to assist with the delay. Airport workers are now exempt from rules requiring self-isolation for seven days if they are a household contact of a COVID-19 patient.
However, they must travel directly to and from work and wear a mask in the workplace at all times.
