From the Archives,1958:Australia’s snail mail ‘rockets’ into the future

In 1958,a senior Australian public servant made some surprisingly accurate (and not so accurate) predictions into the future of telecommunications in Australia.

Rocket Air Mail Possibility Soon

CANBERRA,Monday. — Air mail by rocket, instead of aeroplane, was a possibility in the “not too far distant future” the former Director General of Posts and Telegraphs (Sir Giles Chippindall) said today.

He made this forecast in a special post office pamphlet (The Australian Post Office:Ten Years of Progress,Melbourne,1958) covering the 10 years from July 1,1947,to July 1,1957.

Sir Giles Chippindall said that a shuttle mail service by helicopter between some capital cities and populous country centres was closer at hand.

Further improvement to helicopters,in speed and adaptability seemed a foregone conclusion.

It was “reasonable to expect” a shuttle service using them.

Among other possible post office development were:—

Color television — equipment in Australia was capable of transmitting color — when this was economically justified.

Phonevision — television techniques could eventually be connected with the telephone, and enable two people talking by the phone to see one another.

“Dial Anywhere”

Sir Giles Chippindall said the post office’s tradition of “prompt and dependable service to the public” would be achieved in all settled areas of the Commonwealth.
