An ignominious ascent

Regarding the performance,or lack of,of Morris Minors (C8),Greg Cox of Glenbrook recalls that in 1967 “a mate had a side-valve engine model (850cc capacity,I think) in which we travelled west over the Blue Mountains. Coming back, our climb up the steepest section of Victoria Pass was very slow,so slow that semi-trailers were overtaking us.”

Roderick van Gelder of Hunters Hill “would like to argue that the trafficator (C8) was not a British invention but originated in Italy,to be improved by the French and, finally, perfected by the Germans.“

The process went the other way too. Robert Hosking of Paddington notes that “the Standard Vanguard engine’s genesis (C8) was not Ferguson’s tractor but the German Maybach tank. Ferguson appropriated the design following Germany’s defeat, going on to power his tractors,Standard cars, and my first car,the wonderful $200 Triumph TR2 sports car, with it.”

All these car memories (C8) reminded Janice Creenaune of Austinmer of visits to her grandmother in Glen Innes in the 1970s,when her mother borrowed her grandmother’s FJ Holden to drive them around town to visit other relatives. “As a child coming from Sydney,I was amazed at how polite other drivers were. Everybody stopped for us,in all directions,as soon as they saw us. It was only later I realised that they thought my grandmother was at the wheel and took precautions accordingly.”

Charles Davies-Scourfield of Culburra Beach has a friend who recently turned 85,and when he “turned up at the driving test centre in his ancient BMW was told immediately he had failed. ‘Come again with a proper vehicle’. The old style indicators of flags flipping out right and left (C8) are not considered legal.”

We may scoff, but Rupert Murdoch and partner may indeed be looking forward to the second half of their lives (C8),based upon the observation of Graham Meale of Boambee East that “life expectancy in the US must be pretty good when we keep hearing of people being sentenced to 200-year jail terms.“

From his current eyrie in Sydney,James Wall of Sutton Forest is witness to the daily drop-off for the nearby private school. “I have observed that mothers accompanying their sons almost always carry their bag for them, whereas daughters seem to carry their own. This morning, six out of seven mothers of boys carried their bag and none out of six carried their daughter’s bag.”
