Anti-renewable interests damaging our native species habitat

Anti-renewable interests must be delighted at the news that developments of wind and solar farms are being pushed into endangered native species habitats because of resistance to transmission lines on private property (“Backlash over renewables rollout pushes projects into native species habitat”,April 10). Are these people really so sincere in their beliefs that they would have the rest of us suffer the consequences of them? If it’s just a matter of money, let them name their price and get it over with.Ian Adair,Hunters Hill

Massive wind and solar farms linked by new transmission lines are being pushed in native species habitat as we head towards a net-zero world. The vast majority of energy is consumed in cities, yet 70 per cent of Australian rooftops don’t have solar yet. Make energy where it is used. Do this by providing access to green funds for citizens to install solar and to electrify their households. This would limit the need to impact rural communities and speed up the transition to net-zero with people power.David Sargent,Tennyson (SA)

Can we accept that local opposition to new transmission lines will thwart our transition to renewables?

Can we just accept that local opposition to new transmission lines will thwart our transition to renewables and look at an alternative which is achievable without environmental impacts – let’s go underground. I’ve heard politicians in the past saying it is too expensive but that is rubbish when you compare it with the cost of not transitioning to renewables. Just get on with it.James Elliott,Balmain

Why not provide free rooftop panels to households to form solar “hubs” in city and regional areas to save habitats and to stop annoying farmers? Could degraded farmland for turbines be another option?Margaret Wilkie,Peregian Beach (Qld)

Cancelled out

The conservative ideology that Parnell Palme McGuinness truly represents is the ultimate example of her very own definition of “cancel culture” (“This is how cancel culture ends. Thank you,JK Rowling”,April 7). The conservative minority in this country would,if allowed, restrict or remove any possibility that a progressive idea might change society for the better. Their dogma would have only the wealthy and self-sufficient be able to access affordable education, health, housing and services. The vitriol and intensity of criticism of any progressive idea (such as the Voice or the new governor-general) clearly demonstrate the hypocrisy of their hysteria about cancel culture. If McGuinness and her ilk had their ways all forward-looking or enlightened ideas would be removed from our thoughts, thus achieving the ultimate in cancellation.Tony Heathwood,Kiama Downs

What rush of blood to the head led McGuinness to compare J. K. Rowling to Alexei Navalny? Instead of lauding Rowling, and by extension herself,as heroic truth-tellers,McGuinness should reflect on how political detention and murder really compare with tiresome cultural battles fought by famous novelists or Sunday paper columnists.Colin Stokes,Camperdown

Tortured pedants

The purpose of the apostrophe is to make the meaning clear (“Swift’s new album divides internet pedants”,April 7). If the pedant’s (sic) can tell you where the apostrophe should have been, the meaning must have been clear, and the apostrophe is otiose.Jock Brodie,Port Macquarie

Kennedy factor

If all Robert F. Kennedy does, when it comes to the presidential nominations is to grab some of the votes that would otherwise go to Trump,it will be a worthwhile exercise (“Biden,Trump and the Forrest Gump factor”,April 7). Bearing the Kennedy name and the mystique that goes with it is a great start.Joan Brown,Orange

Powerful argument

Your correspondent is quite correct about the criminal enterprises which supply illegal recreational drugs enforcing their “contracts” by violence (Letters,April 7). They employ similarly brutal methods in competing with other suppliers and often move on to other criminal activities. A powerful argument for decriminalisation (or even legalisation) of all such drugs under strict regulations.Al Svirskis,Mount Druitt

Hidden problem

The problem diagnosing students for cognitive and social-emotional disabilities across the state in public schools often lies hidden in the inability to access and fund the initial diagnosis (“Affluent areas get more cash for fewer pupils”,April 7). In many areas across the state, access to doctors and other specialists is restrictive, costly and very difficult for the families of the ill-informed. It is here where further funding and assistance is needed to enable families to access diagnosis appropriately,as do those in the better-informed affluent areas.Janice Creenaune,Austinmer
