“Actor John Bonney is off to London to try his luck. Like Peter Finch he began earning his living on Sydney newspapers. Peter was a copyboy but John was nothing less than a cadet-reporter. John’s wife is Clemence Bettany,the Australian dancer now in Roland Petit’s ballet company in Paris. They’ve not had a honeymoon yet as each has been working in a different city since their marriage. John intends to make this a honeymoon trip,joining his wife in Paris for a while,before they both go on to London.”
A knock on every door
“More than 9,000 men will be commissioned in Anglican churches to knock on the doors of every Church of England family in Sydney. In the next five weeks these men undertake to tell ‘lukewarm’ Anglicans about the work their Church is doing and about the extra work it could do if it had their support. The Archbishop of Sydney,Dr W.H. K. Mowll,says of the canvass:‘So many who bear the Christian name today appear to have no notion of the vitality and force that Christianity can be’.”
Strike on wharves settled
“Terms were reached for a resumption of work by striking waterfront gatekeepers and watchmen. This was announced following a compulsory conference between the Miscellaneous Workers’ Union and representatives of shipowners. The terms of the resumption were not disclosed,and union officials are expected to recommend their acceptance to members at a meeting on Monday. The strike began on October 11 over a demand by the employees for a rotary system of employment of casual labour.”
