That’s the Goss

Sydney drivers John Goss and Kevin Bartlett helped Ford retain their Bathurst crown with a dramatic win in the Hardie Ferodo 1000 yesterday. They won the motor-racing classic in a privately entered Falcon GT after the leading drivers retired because of mechanical failures. Bartlett drove the last 40 laps of the 6.1km mountain circuit in driving rain. The Torana SLR 5000 of Bob Forbes and Wayne Negus was second, beaten by only 59 seconds.

Tony Mundine defeated

Battered and bleeding, boxer Tony Mundine wept openly following his crushing defeat by Argentina’s Carlos Monzon in last night’s world middleweight title bout in Buenos Aires. Mundine, still groggy from his seventh-round knockout defeat, said:‘I should have kept away from him. I should have boxed’. Despite an intermediary career as a film star,Monzon has lost none of the sting that enabled him to remain unbeaten for 10 years.
