Galileo’s belated blessing
The Pope said the Roman Catholic Church wronged 16th century scientist Galileo, who was condemned by the Inquisition for his view of the solar system, saying “Galileo Galilei’s scientific work was imprudently opposed at the beginning, but now it is recognised by all.” The condemnation may never be formally lifted as it no longer has legal standing, and the Pope has symbolically reversed it by praising the scientist.
