Man jailed over ‘big mama’ VHS sexual assault recording

A man who sexually assaulted a woman in the 1990s and recorded his actions on video has been jailed for at least five years after a judge said the crime was an “extensive violation” which was premeditated.

Boghos “Paul” Parizian,58,was arrested in 2016 after his estranged wife found a VHS tape labelled “big mama” in the garage of their Sydney home when they separated.

In the distressing footage, which lasted for one hour and 54 seconds,Parizian could be seen repeatedly assaulting an unknown woman who appeared to be affected by a substance. The woman repeatedly said “no”,but Parizian responded:“you can’t stop me”.

“I do it my way,” he said. “You don’t believe me? You watch.”

Policetracked down the woman in 2015 using clues in the video and had to inform her she had been assaulted. The womantold the NSW District Court she was “horrified” at what had been done to her and described Parizian as “a predator and a monster”.

Ajury found Parizian guilty of 11 counts of sexual intercourse without consent in February after watching the damning footage during a trial. The offence occurred sometime between October 1991 and March 1993.

On Friday,Judge Jane Culver jailed Parizian for seven and a half years, with a non-parole period of five years.

She sentenced Parizian in line with sexual offences from the 1990s,and said there “would have been a more severe sentence” if the offences occurred today.

“To truly understand the gravity of this case, one must watch the video,” Culver said.

She said the woman recalled going out with Parizian one evening and drinking orange juice, before being taken to his home in Liverpool where she started to get a headache and felt woozy.

Culver said the woman recalled seeing the mattress in his bedroom was at a strange angle facing the wardrobe, which had its usually-closed doors slightly ajar. The woman declined sex,and remembered Parizian requesting a hug and being angry, rough and forceful.

“She then does not have a memory of what happened after that,” Culver said.

The footage showed the woman attempted to resist Parizian, hitting and pushing him,and told him she did not consent to sexual activity or being filmed. He threatened to have anal sex with her and ejaculate in her if she did not co-operate with him.

Culver said it was apparent from the footage that the woman was “clearly” affected by a substance, but she could not make a finding that Parizian spiked the orange juice because he was not charged with that offence, which carried a higher maximum penalty.

She said Parizian “premeditated the offences” by setting up the mattress and a camera in the cupboard, and repeatedly denied to the woman that she was being filmed.

Culver said the offences occurred over a “significant” period of time, which was “an extensive violation of the victim”. Parizian continues to claim he did not assault the woman and was engaged in a consensual role-play.

The judge said Parizian, who receives a disability pension and has no criminal history, has been diagnosed with a variety of medical conditions which could impact his time in custody, including vascular dementia.

She said he is at below-average risk of reoffending and has some positive aspects of rehabilitation, but these must be tempered by his “continuing lack of insight, and hostility towards women more generally”.

Parizian sat in the dock wearing a white T-shirt when his sentence was handed down. He sipped from a cup of water before being led away by Corrective Services.

He will be eligible for parole in February 2028.
