Sour words for that darned sourdough

So let’s talk some more about bread (Col8,Tuesday),following on from John Turnell, who broke inner-city ranks by disparaging sourdough, known locally as the Bread of Heaven, but not to all those outside that geographical area,it seems.

Gail Groga,of Constitution Hill agrees, saying,“I’m with John, bring back normal bread, white, wholemeal, seeded. Totally over only having sourdough option.”

John Kouvelis,of what he calls “Northern Neutral Bay Heights (upper)” but the rest of us call the middle of Neutral Bay,adds,“I always ask for a steak knife with my bacon and eggs to saw through the rock-hard sourdough toast beneath.”

Then,Joshua Steele of Denhams Beach complains,“Recently my preferred brand of rye bread was claimed to be ‘new, improved, now even softer’. Unfortunately, the bread now has the texture of fairy floss, even when toasted. Why is it that all bread must be softer?

Andrew Taubman of Queens Park objects,“Try getting a burger anywhere that’s not on brioche. Whoever thought sweet bread was appropriate for a savoury dish?” Col8 is so with you on this,Andrew, there ought to be a law against brioche for hamburgers.

Trouble continues with fuel gauges. Bob Roobottom of Taree remembers a Kawasaki motorcycle he bought in 2001. “When I requested a test ride, the gauge was almost on empty. ‘Don’t worry,’ they said. After buying one and filling the tank,I found that I travelled for about 80kms before the gauge moved from ‘Full’,and when it showed ‘Empty’ I could still do about 90kms before it ran dry.”

Maybe Portugal isn’t the blessed land of coffee and low tolls we had hoped for (Col8 yesterday). Pauline Burnett of Bilgola Plateau says “Merona Meroo may not be weeping, but we nearly were when after a long drive from Aveiro to the Algarve in 2017 we had racked up a charge of over $100. Our SUV-style car was classed as a small truck. By comparison,Sydney tolls were far cheaper.”

Coffee news from an even more far-flung reader than usual. Chris Keane of Seattle,USA,currently in Ukraine, reports,“I have been delighted to have a daily cup of that world-famous Australian invention, the flat white. In Ukrainian,it is phonetically written, and said,as ‘flat vite’.”

And one last travel tale. Scott Illingworth of Kiama reports that “a large billboard at a local service station declares ‘New land coming soon to Forest Reach’.” From where? He wonders.
