‘Completely heartbroken’:Family speaks after worker critically injured

A Brisbane workerwho fell during a scaffolding accident at one of Australia’s biggest megaprojects remains fighting for his life in hospital,his family says.

Nation “Nash” Kouka,54,fell several metres on Tuesday at the $6.3 billion Cross River Rail Boggo Road station site in Dutton Park,in Brisbane’s inner south.

He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

In an online fundraiser started to help Kouka,his family said the accident was devastating.

“We,his family,are completely heartbroken,as are his friends and co-workers and anyone who has had the joy of meeting Nation,” the post read.

“A truly good guy.

“The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming.

“We deeply appreciate your thoughts and prayers,and we ask that you continue to hold Nation in your hearts and minds as he continues his struggle to survive and heal.”

As of midday Saturday,more than $18,000 had been donated to the family.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey at the time said the incident was a “wake-up call” to the government,and told reporters:“If I was a worker on this project,I’d be concerned.”

The project is a 10.2-kilometre rail line from Dutton Park,in Brisbane’s south,to the northern suburb of Bowen Hills. It will include 5.9 kilometres of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and the CBD.

The Boggo Road site was expected to remain closed until Monday.
