‘It’s beyond words’:Ten-year-old girl stabbed to death

A 17-year-old girl has been arrested after her 10-year-old sister was stabbed to death at a house near Newcastle on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services responded to reports of the stabbing about 3.45pm. Paramedics treated the younger girl at the home on Thurston Street in Boolaroo,but she died of multiple stab wounds.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District arrested the 17-year-old girl at the home. She was taken to Belmont police station where she was assisting with inquiries,police said.

The girls were sisters,Nine News reported.

“It is just beyond words,” said a neighbour,who did not want to be identified because she knew the girl’s family. “We are grieving.”

A crime scene was established as investigations continued.

A police forensics unit was at the house before 6pm,and most of the quiet suburban street had been sealed off by police tape.

Police remained tight-lipped about the investigation,which is still ongoing. However,NSW Police Deputy Commissioner of Regional NSW Field Operations Paul Pisanos told 2GB paramedics tried their best to save the child’s life.

“Emergency services did try for some time to try and revive the child,but unfortunately they were unsuccessful and the child was deceased,” he said.
