Emergency crews battle blaze in Fremantle boatyard

A thick plume of black smoke travelled across Fremantle on Sunday morning as firefighters battled a blaze in a dry boatyard along Marine Terrace.

Emergency crews equipped with gas masks and oxygen tanks arrived at Blue HQ Fremantle, near the fishing boat harbour, about 9am following reports of a boat on fire.

Emergency services were called to Blue HQ on Saturday following reports of a boat fire.

Footage obtained byWAtoday shows large flames engulfing the boat at the lifters in close proximity to other vessels as police arrive at the scene.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said firefighter unis from Fremantle had managed to contain the fire to a single boat without backup from other stations.

Witnesses said the thick black smoke could be seen from the west end of the port city, and it appeared one of the boats near the vessel had been damaged by the smoke.

Police are treating the fire as not suspicious, meaning investigations into its cause will be carried out by DFES.

Some roads may be closed.
