Kwinana residents told to stay in as warehouse fire spreads toxic smoke

Fifty firefighters tackled a large burning fertiliser shed on Friday at Kwinana Beach with residents up to 15 kilometres inland warned to stay inside.

The hazardous materials warning affected residents in 18 suburbs including Kwinana,Parmelia,Wellard,East Rockingham and Oakford. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advised them to stay inside with air conditioning turned off.

On Saturday 12 firefighters were still at the scene and nearby residents in Kwinana Beach were still being warned to remain inside to avoid fumes and smoke.

The fire was reported to authorities at 1.30pm on Friday and raged through the facility of Canadian fertiliser giant Nutrien Ag which imports granular and liquid fertiliser,and along a conveyor leading to a jetty.

Port Road is still closed at the intersection of Kwinana Beach Road but the smoke is no longer impacting people north of Port Road and south of Wells Park.

People are being advised to stay away from the area.

Firefighters were being assisted by specialists from the state government’s ChemCentre.
