The ‘Rozehell’ interchange - a spaghetti junction that doesn’t pasta test

How many more things can go wrong in Sydney’s transport? We’ve had ferries, trains, buses, trams ... now Rozelle’s spaghetti junction. Letter writers and commenters were not amused by the wasteful use of public money, and the hours they spent trapped in traffic,on the newly-opened “Rozehell” interchange.

Is this another state Coalition legacy left for us to enjoy?

Tetchy Techy This is what happens when a government removes public servants (engineers, estimators and traffic engineers) with decades of experience who would normally design or review any road infrastructure project to determine feasibility, viability and functionality before construction. There has been a pattern of removing public servants who might challenge the wishes of a minister and not just in the roads portfolio.

Philodendron Amazing;spending billions building new toll roads and ending up with this mess. This is what happens when you get toll road operators to build and run roads for you. They are obviously only interested in making money, nothing else matters. Another state Coalition legacy left for us to enjoy.

Graham M How many more things can Sydney transport stuff up? We’ve had ferries, trains, buses, trams ... now this. Australia, the clever country.

Sarkey Ten lanes merging into four will ease traffic congestion? Only in the Coalition utopia of a land covered by freeways and tunnels.

lawyers “A forever problem”? That should read “a very expensive forever problem”.

Another excuse to work from home?

MaRio Previous government ministers, and former and present heads of departments, should be summoned to account for the mess and the stupidity, not go scot-free.

Basil Has anyone said it yet? This mess is a good argument for working from home.

salti This problem has nothing to do with people not wanting to pay a toll. The toll excuse is just a government blame shift onto drivers.

GZ The dog’s breakfast of a Rozelle Interchange was constructed by contractors managed by the previous Transport for NSW government, and Chris Minns and the current government have once again been left to clear up the mess left behind. Just call a spade a shovel when it comes to pointing the finger of blame.

Tommy O.G. They should change their name from Transport for NSW to Travesty for NSW.

Geebung I drive from the Blue Mountains to Parramatta for work … 47 km in 45 mins, door to door. I’m really appalled by this traffic situation in Rozelle.

Tuscaledo Travelling in from Ryde a couple of times this week I do feel for the locals in Rozelle. How this benefits the community is beyond me. Government will need to pull a rabbit out of the hat on this one otherwise,we will end up with another insular peninsula, this time in the inner west.

Teacher with curly hair Might have to ride a bike.

Marc The bike lanes (sorry, roads with bike symbols painted on them or a footpath with bus stops in the middle of it) in Rozelle and Balmain are just amazing. Wait, they didn’t put any new ones in.

Don Leayr,AlburyIt amazes me that the planners in Sydney haven’t woken up to the fact that building more, and wider, roads into the city causes more cars to enter the city. It’s fortunate that they are not designing rockets.

Why can’t we have publicly owned roads only?

Mitch In terms of improving the lives of Sydneysiders, this whole project has been a complete debacle and a waste of public money. Although in terms of promoting car usage and transferring public money into the pockets of Transurban,it has been a complete success.

serenissimo The planners of the “Rozehell″⁣ interchange knew very well what would happen when it opened - it is child’s play to simulate traffic on a computer, and they must have known when and where queueing would happen. They knew it and did nothing.

Seriously It’s a pity the previous government didn’t come clean about their intention to apply billions in taxpayer funding to develop a road network, that is their governmental responsibility, just to slow traffic and funnel cars onto a commercial toll road and into a private company’s coffers.

hmm It would be a lot better to have publicly owned toll roads, and a requirement that their development benefits the people of Sydney rather than private companies. We have public trains. Why can’t we have publicly owned roads?
