Next stop China:Cook takes Asian tour to state’s biggest trading partner

Roger Cook will travel to China next month in his first trip there as premier.

Nine News Perth can reveal the state government will use the visit to lobby for direct flights,a service that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Then Premier Mark McGowan visited China in April but couldn’t secure a new non-stop aviation deal.

Mr Cook’s visit will follow Anthony Albanese’s,who is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week.

Roger Cook addressed Japanese business heavyweights at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo where we spruiked the 30 hydrogen projects underway within Western Australia.

He also threw his support behind WA’s gas sector and said the government’s pursuit of net zero would not come at the expense of energy-hungry countries in South East Asia.

“We need to work with our South East Asian regional partners,to make sure that we are working together so that we’re not simply wrapping ourselves in a blanket of self-satisfaction by reaching Net Zero ourselves,if that is going to be at the detriment of the globe and our South East Asian friends,” he said.

Earlier the Premier and Treasurer Rita Saffioti toured the busy district of Shinjuku where Tourism WA has taken out digital advertising featuring a whale shark promoting the Ningaloo Reef.

The State Government’s 3-day tourism and trade mission comes to an end tomorrow.
