Millennial marks 31st birthday with secret $32m sale of Vaucluse home

Mother-son trophy home collectorsJing Wang andWilliam Wu,of Chinese-backed property developer Mayrin Group,have pivoted from theirlarge-scale acquisition drive of previous years into a sell-off of their best houses,led this week by the off-market sale of their Vaucluse home for $32 million.

The secret sale negotiated by Bradfield BadgerFox’s Alexander George and buyer’s agent Martine Harvey comes as Wu celebrates his 31st birthday on Saturday.

The contemporary five-bedroom house was built in 2017 by hotelierMarcus Levy and his wifeVanessa Sanchez-Levy,who sold it the following year to Wang for $20.8 million as their family home.

Wang and Wu are known for their high capital gains ambitions,and this house was no exception,returning a more than $2 million jump in value for each of the five years she owned it.

In September,Wu sold another Vaucluse house he purchased in 2021 for $13.32 million. It sold for more than $18 million.

Next up is a nearby mansion on Black Street Wu bought two years ago for $23.2 million. Christie’s Darren Curtis and Forbes’ Ken Jacobs want $29.5 million to $32 million.

Inner West life

BigCommerce co-founderEddie Machaalani is well known among inner west property watchers for smashing all local house price records in 2021 when he paid$25 million for a waterfront estate in Abbotsford.

He hasn’t stopped there. On Friday Machaalani paid $8.8 million for the Strathfield home of former Bingo Industries chiefDaniel Tartak,complete with home cinema,heated swimming pool and a tennis court.

Tartak and Machaalani previously came together on the public record in 2017 when they both ranked on theAFR Young Rich List:Tartak with an estimated worth of $180 million and Machaalani at $119 million.

Machaalani andMitchell Harper founded the e-commerce software company BigCommerce in 2009 only to see it list on the NASDAQ three years ago.

Kurraba Point’s high

In Kurraba Point,the historic Glencairn mansion is up for sale with hopes of setting a suburb record given a guide of $25 million to $27.5 million by Black Diamondz’ Monika Tu.

The Federation mansion with tennis court,pool,sauna,spa,guest quarters,billiard room and media room is owned by investorSandy Jan,wife of foreign exchange dealerTony Collick.

It set a suburb high of $16.5 million when it last traded in 2016 when HSBC Bank Australia chairmanGrant King and his wifeJenny sold it.

The listing follows a run of high-end purchases by Jan’s Harriette&Co investment vehicle,including a $16 million apartment in Darling Point last year and a newly built house in Pymble in August for $5.6 million.

Melanie Poswell,the wife of Gannet Capital founderGlenn Poswell,has emerged as the buyer of the South Coast weekender of Star casino’s former chiefMatt Bekier and his wifeMelinda.

The Rose Bay-based Poswell,former chief and founder of thePacker family’s Ellerston Capital,has paid $5.3 million for the designer digs through Christie’s Darren Curtis,setting a high for Callala Beach.

Still with the weekender market,John Bruce-Smith,the former chief financial officer of Atlassian,has paid $2.78 million for the Kangaroo Valley getaway of Seven’s star presenterLarry Emdur.

The shipping-container house,Sky Ridge,was owned byThe Morning Show host for three years,having last traded for $2.15 million,and spent a good third of that time for sale.

It comes as the Southern Highlands property owned by former Liberal MP John Alexander is up for sale with $10 million to $11 million hopes.

At that level Iona will have more than doubled in value since 2017 when the then member for Bennelongpurchased it for $4.8 million. The 40-hectare property has doubled as a high-end holiday let at $2000 a night.

Closer to home,the Pittwater residence designed by architectLouise Nettleton and owned by former Macquarie Bank senior executiveMichael Price is for sale with a $13 million to $14 million guide by McGrath’s James Baker and David Eden.
