TheHerald’s Tom Decent won the award for best sport coverage by an individual – written for breaking one of the biggest sport stories of the year,revealing former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones had held about becoming their coach while he was at the helm of Australia at the Rugby World Cup.
The judges said Decent’s dogged pursuit of the truth shone through in his stories,.
Jones was unveiled as coach of Japan in December.
The Age’s chief sports writer Greg Baum was recognised for his – a rare interview in which Moore revealed the story behind his famous Anzac Day speech,described his diverse interests beyond football and opened up the influence of his famous father,Peter Moore.
Moore went on to lead the biggest club in Australia to the 2023 AFL premiership.
Konrad Marshall,a senior writer forGood Weekend magazine,won the award for best depiction of inclusive sport for his,the first male professional basketballer in the world to publicly declare he was gay.
Published in February last year,Marshall’s story charted the difficulties Humphries had faced before and after coming out.
Marshall’s work also included a profile of former AFL coach Danielle Laidley about her role in the transgender community and her life after transitioning.
Another highlight of Wednesday night’s awards dinner night at the MCG was the bestowing of a lifetime achievement award on Nine sports caller Ray “Rabs” Warren.
Now retired,Warren made his name calling horse racing and rugby league – he commentated 99 State of Origin games and 45 NRL grand finals – and also at Olympic and Commonwealth Games,where his swimming calls gained legendary status.
“I had a deep-seated passion for broadcasting sport. It didn’t matter if it was a Melbourne Cup or the Olympic Games. I loved going to work and there’s not a lot of people that can say that,but I thank God I can,” Warren said.
The documentary,a joint,production by JamTV and streaming service Stan,which is owned by Nine,won the award for best sport profile – broadcast.
