“Horrific. I feel shocking,” Maxwell says when asked how he is. “It was obviously quite hot when we were fielding today. Just lucky enough we came out with a plan to stay at one end once I could get a bit of movement back.
“It was just about sticking to our own batting plans for as long as we could. The lbw just going over the top was the kick-starter I needed to be a bit more proactive.
“I certainly had my chances,I led a charmed life out there and was very lucky. To make the most of it and go on with it tonight is probably the most pleasing thing.
“To win a game like tonight, hopefully that belief threads through the change room.”
Maxwell’s 201 not out is the highest ODI score for Australia and the third-highest World Cup innings ever, among a host of other records broken.
But those markers won’t do justice to the fact that Maxwell saw Australia slip to 7-91 before he combined with Cummins for a stand worth a remarkable 202 runs - Cummins made 12 from 68 balls, but did everything required by staying in.
Nor will they show the visceral struggle Maxwell had with his body to bat without moving his feet until some of his cramping subsided. His eyes and hands are something else.
That result secures Australia’s third spot in the table and a semi-final meeting with South Africa.
