The winning design,by ASPECT Studios, will stretch south from Alfred Street, hugging the western edge of the bridge as to intrude less on Alfred Park below.
The government estimates that close to 2000 cyclists use the bridge each day, making it the most heavily used cycleway in the city.
Cities,Infrastructure and Active Transport Minister Rob Stokes said the design had responded “imaginatively and sensitively” to the heritage of the area.
“The Sydney Harbour Bridge was visionary when it was originally designed 90 years ago,” Mr Stokes said. “Now is the time to look ahead and deliver an equally forward-thinking extension of the bridge that will allow even more people to ride between the Sydney CBD and the north shore for work or leisure.”
ASPECT Studios design and strategy director Sacha Coles said the importance of the site to local Indigenous communities had played an important role in the composition of the cycleway.
“The crossing point of the harbour from Gadigal to Cammeraygal is a really important design component for us and this idea of crossing country is something that really generated our narrative,” he said.
