“Vertical schools are absolutely a part of the landscape,particularly with increased urbanisation and land availability the way it is,” he said. “We’ll definitely be seeing more vertical schools.”
But he said their ideal height was five to 12 storeys,ruling out vertical schools of 30 storeys or more. “I can’t see us going more than 12 storeys,” he said.
Mr Manning said the new vertical schools in operation were “working very well”,though the department was looking to make lifts “kid-proof”.

“The use of lifts is always interesting,particularly in a high school setting,and the kids learn very quickly how to disable the lifts. That’s just kids,” he toldThe Sydney Morning Herald’s Infrastructure Summit last week.
“We will begin to write a specification that makes them kid-proof.”
