The most recent strategic review of the regulator,completed in October,recommended an overhaul of the office to deal with thegrowth of political lobbying in the state,being overseen with stretched resources and alack of independence over its resourcing.
After consideration by the economics and governance committee,the government has until early September to issue a response. Professor Peter Coaldrake,in his recentreview of government culture and accountability,also pointed to the outstanding work.
Monday’s Investigation Workshop report from the CCC made clear the decision to outline its investigation into issues raised by recently departed Integrity Commissioner Nikola Stepanov was done to clear up months of “confusion and misinformation”.
Asked about the report on Tuesday,deputy LNP leader Jarrod Bleijie said the Opposition stood by its comments.
“How the government wish to categorise something,or the CCC ... as I said,I have a different categorisation of what occurred,but I stand by our previous comments,” Bleijie told reporters.
In a statement,Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman said a failure to apologise for “fearmongering” was “worse than irresponsible”.
The watchdog’s investigation — separate toongoing work by the Public Service Commission,under CCC watch,regarding a bullying complaint — found no evidence to claims information had leaked from the office,and described the taking and resetting of two laptops as “entirely ordinary”.
