He had just stepped off the train when he saw Bree and decided to assault her.
While he strangled the woman, she tried to elbow and hit Pedersen-Sullivan as he tightened his grip around her neck. The pair fell to the ground and she began to shout,“Help”,“Call police”. Pedersen-Sullivan muffled the screams by putting his hand over her mouth.
Bree managed to punch him and break free but as she got up to run away her attacker grabbed her jacket and pulled her back down, ripping her clothes in the process. She continued to fight and eventually escaped and waved down a member of the public, begging for help.
Pedersen-Sullivan fled but left behind a vital clue. His lighter had fallen out of his pocket in the scuffle, and lay on the ground beside the woman’s headphones.
Police recovered his DNA and he later pleaded guilty to impeding someone’s breathing and unlawfully detaining a person.
During his sentencing in the Perth District Court on Monday, the court heard how Bree had been impacted by the random attack.
“I don’t feel confident walking around in Perth, especially not at night,” she said.
