The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecasts a top of 13 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday, with more than a 90 per cent chance of rain in the city on both days.
Weatherzone says if those forecasts are accurate, this will be Melbourne’s coldest weekend since August 2020,and thecoldest May weekend in 23 years.
Weather bureau meteorologist Cheyne O’Brien said frost warnings could be issued, with Sunday expected to be the chilliest day with an overnight low of 7 degrees.
“This is the first real cold break for winter,” O’Brien says. “Not that we are in winter quite yet, but[it’s] a taste of winter.”
Hail could hit Melbourne’s suburbs from the late morning on Saturday as the cold front sweeps across the state, according to the weather bureau.
Thunderstorms are a possibility in the late afternoon and evening. Snow is also expected down to 700 metres.
