Murphy,22,made an impressive debut during Australia’s tour of India earlier this year after just a handful of Sheffield Shield matches for Victoria, claiming 14 wickets in the four Tests at an average of 25. This included Virat Kohli once in each Test.

“Looking back on India, getting the opportunity to play Test cricket and being exposed to high-level contests only helps, and I took a lot of confidence from that experience,” Murphy said before training at Headingley on Tuesday. “Trusting that if I do get the opportunity, believe in myself that I can be good enough at this level.”

Murphy has never visited England before, let alone played cricket in English conditions.

“Being able to sit back and watch the first couple of Tests and the World Test Championship final (against India),just gain a bit of information about conditions and the pace of play, little things like that you can take into account,” he said. “It’s just about trying to adapt on the day.”

Murphy knows that under their new Bazball approach England will attack him from the outset.

“I think they’ll probably come even harder at me,” Murphy said. “Obviously,I haven’t played a hell of a lot of Test cricket, there’s a challenge that presents itself.

“They keep taking the game on,and I think it’s about trying to navigate through that and come up with a few different ideas that can help, and stay in the contest as long as I can and try to keep creating chances.”
