The effort didn’t go unnoticed by players, including the likes of Alaalatoa,McDermott and Leota, who are still trying to brush off the disaster that was the Wallabies’ 2023 campaign.

“We didn’t bring up much from last year … it was great to meet him,” Alaalatoa said. “I think Joe’s appointment for the game is going to be awesome.

“It was about sharing ideas and asking questions about the program and our Super[Rugby] teams. He wanted to get an understanding from the players on a few things and see where he can add his input. He wants to make those connections stronger. It’s positive vibes so far.”

Schmidt has indicated that he will live in New Zealand for the foreseeable future due to family reasons but will spend a large portion of time in Australia as the Wallabies build into their campaign, which starts with two Tests against Wales in July following Eddie Jones’ acrimonious exit late last year.

“I’ve heard great things about Joe and to meet him today was really good and backed up all the things I’ve heard,” McDermott said. “He’s got a great rugby brain and I think his appointment is nothing but a good decision from Rugby Australia.

“He just wanted to get a perspective from all five Super Rugby captains around what happened in the past under ‘Rens’[Dave Rennie] and also Eddie. Also around the way we ran our weekly schedule, captain’s runs, all that stuff. It was pretty casual and for him to get to know us. We chatted a bit of footy.”

Wallabies players are eager to move past the disappointment of being bundling out in the pool stages of the World Cup for the first time and trying to generate interest in Super Rugby Pacific, which starts next week.

Players are also eager to see what comes of a review into the Wallabies’ World Cup campaign. RA initially said recommendations from a three-person panel would be made public by Christmas, but there has been no update.

The Melbourne Rebels host the Brumbies next Friday in Melbourne, while the Waratahs travel to Brisbane for a blockbuster against the Reds the following day.

“I’d love for us to play to our potential,” said Waratahs skipper Jake Gordon. “Rankings or predictions puts extra pressure on us. I’d just love to see us play our brand of footy.”
