However,an expected declaration did not come, giving Sutherland a shot at history. Having been so dominant for so long, she may regret the Twenty20 scoop she attempted against spinner Chloe Tryon, which lobbed to first slip. Sutherland batted for more than five hours across two days and faced 256 balls, hitting 27 fours and two sixes.

She shared a partnership of 144 with Ashleigh Gardner (65),a record for the sixth wicket in Australia. Having been dropped on 54 driving low to cover,Gardner was leg before wicket to Nadine de Klerk to a ball which cut back and trapped her in front.

South Africa claimed their second wicket on day two when 26-year-old left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux, playing her first international in more than two years following a serious knee injury, shouldered arms to Tryon and was bowled for 33.

Sutherland brought up her century with successive boundaries from the first over against the second new ball, slicing over backward point then playing her trademark back-foot drive through the covers.

Such is the infrequency of women’s Test cricket that this is the 22-year-old’s 62nd match for Australia but just her fifth Test. Her first Test century,137 not out batting at No.8,came against England at Trent Bridge midway through last year.

Her father, former Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland, was at the WACA Ground to watch the most recent family feat – 12 days after being at the SCG to see his son,Will, make his international debut in a one-day match against the West Indies.
