Port Adelaide said in a statement that Finlayson “made the club aware during the three-quarter time break and apologised to the victim on field after the final siren last night.

“Finlayson, who will be counselled by club leaders in the coming days, will provide a statement tomorrow.”

The club said it would now wait for the AFL’s investigation to be completed.

Speaking on Channel Nine’sThe Footy Show on Sunday morning,Dillon said the investigation would be handled promptly.

“We’ll look into that,we’ve got to run a process, speak to all involved, but Jeremy’s come out,he’s admitted making the comment and he’s apologised,” Dillon said.

“So now we’ve just got to work through what the accountability will be. I don’t want to put too much of a time frame on it,but it will be done this week.”

“We are aware of an alleged comment made by a Port Adelaide player in last night’s match versus Essendon. We are taking this matter extremely seriously. AFLIU[the AFL integrity unit] are now investigating and we will provide an update once that investigation is completed,” he said.

Multiple players heard the slur and alerted the umpires, according to the AFL. League officials also heard the comment on the umpires’ microphone.

Finlayson could be sanctioned by the AFL if he is found to have breached the rules by making a homophobic slur.

Finlayson kicked three goals on Friday night in his 112th match. He is a key player in Port’s forward line as a ruck/forward and was among the Power’s best players in the comprehensive 69-point victory over the Bombers.

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson was handed a $20,000 fine and a two-match suspended sentence for conduct unbecoming for directing an inappropriate comment to St Kilda players Jimmy Webster and Dougal Howard in a pre-season game this year, which followed Webster’s high hit on North skipper Jy Simpkin.

Clarkson also has to attend a pride in sport program.
