What do Victoria’s new international border restrictions mean for you?

New border restrictions for international travellers entering Victoria began at 11.59pm on Saturday,after the World Health Organisation declared the Omicron strain of COVID-19 a ‘variant of concern’.

While little is known about the variant’s capacity to cause serious illness or death,Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said Omicron is likely to be “very transmissible”,already becoming the predominant variant in South Africa.

On Saturday,the federal government announced there would be no travel to Australia for non-citizens flying from Botswana,Eswatini,Lesotho,Malawi,Mozambique,Namibia,South Africa,The Seychelles or Zimbabwe.

The Victorian Health Department has also significantly changed the requirements for all international travellers who are allowed to land in Australia. Take a look below to see how the changes affect you.

If you’re an Australian citizen now entering Victoria after visiting southern Africa:

If you have travelled through southern Africa in the last 14 days and were already in Victoria before 11.59pm on Saturday:

You’re unvaccinated and you’re entering Victoria from somewhere other than southern Africa
