Split into two parts, season six will thrust viewers into two distinct decades:The 1990s,a time when the tabloid obsession with Princess Diana was at an all-time high following her divorce from Prince Charles, and 2005,as the Monarch looks to modernise.
Over six seasons,The Crownhas proven itself to be a lightning rod for both controversy and critical acclaim, and based on the first-look images released by Netflix, this last hurrah promises more of the same. Here is everything you need to know aboutThe Crown season six.
OK,so when does The Crown season six arrive on Netflix?
The Crown will return for its sixth and final season in two parts. Part one (four episodes) drops on November 16,followed by part two (six episodes) on December 14.
And which period does it cover again?
The first batch of episodes will chart the whirlwind romance between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed (which only lasted six weeks) and then finish with the fatal car crash in a Parisian tunnel.
We will also see a recreation of Harry and Will on their 1997 vacation to Balmoral Castle with their father,Charles. Part two will move the story forward to 2005 as we see the Queen (Imelda Staunton) reach her golden jubilee, the marriage of Charles and Camilla, and the beginnings of a new royal relationship in William and Kate Middleton.
Wait,so does that mean we see Diana on the yacht?
Absolutely. The first-look pictures released by Netflix tease a recreation of that Al Fayed family yacht trip to St Tropez that we saw Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) packing for at the end of the fifth season.
The real-life photo of Diana sitting alone at the end of a diving board attached to the edge of Mohamed Al Fayed’s private yacht,Jonikal, while on vacation with her new boyfriend is considered one of the most iconic and poignant images ever taken. The photo was captured precisely one week before she passed away.
But then,no Diana in part two, right?
Wrong. While part two takes place after Diana’s passing, according tothe spirit of Diana returns to haunt the Windsors!
The Telegraphreports Diana will be shown talking to the then-Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth in the days after her death. She allegedly thanks her ex-husband for sobbing over her body in a Paris morgue, saying:“Thank you for how you were in hospital. So raw, broken – and handsome. I’ll take that with me.”
She is also said to hold hands with the Queen, telling her:“As long as anyone can remember, you’ve taught us what it means to be British. Maybe it’s time to show you’re ready to learn too.”
The Crown unleashing the ghost of Diana feels unexpected.
According toThe Telegraph, Netflix is framing the scenes as “sensitive and thoughtful imagined conversations.” It’s kind of likeThe CrownmeetsA Christmas Carol.
Do you know what I’m most excited about for the mid-2000s episodes?
Seeing Prince William with hair.
Yes,and also Kate Middleton!
That’s right. Obviously, the princes will see a casting change between the two batches of episodes as they age up. Rufus Kampa plays young William in part one;Ed McVey plays him in part two;Fflyn Edwards plays young Harry in part one,and Luther Ford portrays him in part two.
Meanwhile, newcomer Meg Bellamy will play Kate Middleton and another fresh face,Matilda Broadbridge, will appear as Kate’s younger sister,Pippa Middleton.
How exciting! And this is definitely the last season? We won’t seeThe Crownreturning for a seventh season starring Meghan Markle as Meghan Markle?
I wouldn’t have thought so.
