Is the new Dyson Airwrap really worth the hype?

In the maelstrom of TikTok,Reddit and YouTube reviews, finding, researching and selecting a big-ticket item can be overwhelming. Our “Worth the Hype?” series aims to cut through the noise to deliver a comprehensive, independently chosen and ad-free product review.

For the last few months,it’s felt like the Dyson Airwrap has been stalking me. OnLove Island UK,I watched soon-to-be-winner Ekin-Su wrap thick sections of her hair around a curling barrel. And at a recent girls lunch,I was so transfixed by the bouncy hair of the friend sitting across from me,we hadn’t even been served our drinks before I demanded she tell me how she’d done her hair. My friend’s secret, the same as Ekin-Su’s,was the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler. I needed to know more.

In June,Dyson released a new version of its multi-styler priced at $899 – a cost that has, very reasonably, caught people’s attention. While the concept of the updated Airwrap remains the same as that of its predecessor – working as both a styler and replacement to your regular hair dryer – there have been tweaks to several of the attachments:two brushes now swivel as you style;a new smoothing dryer blasts flyaways;and redesigned curling barrels eliminate the need to change stylers when switching the direction of your curls. And,this September,Dyson launched acustomisation tool on their site, which lets you choose your attachments according to your hair type,as well as pick a colour for your styler and add your initials to your case – all touches I can’t help but be drawn to.

I’ve had a somewhat tortured relationship with my hair since 2016,when I bought a voucher for a cheap keratin treatment on Groupon (I know) that left my hair flat, brittle, and thinning. Now,I’ll try pretty much anything that promises to improve the health of my hair, while also providing some much-needed volume and shape. Every time the Dyson Airwrap popped up in my life,it sounded like it could be the answer to my prayers. So,I decided to try it out.

What does the Dyson Airwrap do?

Much like the name “multistyler” suggests, the Dyson Airwrap can pretty much do it all, from drying to styling. The new Airwrap comes with six attachments:

When using the Airwap, most people “rough dry” their hair to around 80 per cent using the dryer attachment, then style it how they’d like using others. My go-to routine involves drying, before using the soft brush attachment to add volume at my roots, then drying my mid-lengths and ends with a curling barrel, leaving soft waves. Thankfully,it’s easy to switch attachments – they all click easily on and off – so it’s not as cumbersome as it sounds.

It’s also worth noting, for anyone who already owns a Dyson Supersonic, that there’s aFlyaway attachment for that hair dryer, which relies on the same technology as the Airwap’s smoothing attachment.

Is the Dyson Airwrap easy to use?

Look – not at first. However, much like learning how to speak another language, knit,or bake bread, the effort that goes into perfecting the Airwrap definitely pays off.

For me,learning to use the Airwrap wasn’t quite as difficult as expected, after paying a visit to theDyson Demo Store on Sydney’s George Street (another store recently opened in Sydney’s Moore Park and the company says it has “ambitious growth plans” for more locations). There,I had my hair analysed and washed, before learning first-hand how to use the multi-styler by watching an expert, then trying it for myself. YouTube and TikTok are also filled with helpful tutorials.

What’s the most surprising thing about the Dyson Airwrap?

When first using the styler,I was shocked by the coolness of even the highest heat setting, while my hair was drying faster than ever. Since using the Dyson twice a week my scalp feels healthier and I’ve noticed a lot less hair fall.

I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how well the multistyler works on next-day hair. With a quick spritz of water,it’s easy to re-style any dropped waves or add extra volume at my roots when needed.

Is the Dyson Airwrap worth the cost?

It’s hard to put a price on good hair and only you can decide how much you’d be willing to spend on the promise of a salon-fresh style every day.

If you’re someone who pays for regular blow dries,it might be easy to justify the purchase after eliminating those from your beauty budget. But,on the flip side,if you’re happy with your current styling routine,it could be much harder to stomach. If you’re feeling torn,I recommend a visit to a Demo Store, where you can literally try before you buy – and walk out with much better hair than you walked in with.

The Dyson Airwrap multi-styler is available fromDyson,Sephora, andAdore Beauty for $899.
