The deal would not come into place until Britain formally left the European Union which Mr Turnbull noted would be some years but,he said,it was in Australia's interests to make sure such a deal was ready to begin once that happened.
New Zealand and Canada have also sent trade negotiators to Britain. At present, the UK has a desperate shortage of officials who are trained in negotiating trade agreements because all such deals affecting Britain have been drafted centrally in Brussels for decades.
Mr Turnbull also held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping where the pair discussed Chinese investment in Australia.
The Prime Minister said last month's decision to block the NSW government's sale of Ausgrid was not specifically discussed and noted Australia was the second largest destination of Chinese investment after the United States.
