Judith Durham recalls the momentous day:“It was pretty awe-inspiring. Seeing this crowd,we’d never experienced that.

“From a singer’s point of view,[worrying] whether you’ve got a dryness in your throat because it was open air,to perform well was my obvious wish. And we didn’t have enough material. People had been there since the early morning in the hot sun. We got to the end of our repertoire and we’d only rehearsed five songs or something and it wasn’t enough.

“Everybody wanted more. I was overwhelmed by it as much as anything. Stunned. All of us were pretty stunned. It’s such a miracle to think it went in the Guinness Book of Records.”

History remembers that crowd - and that dress, the green number Durham wore that day becoming instantly iconic. It is now part of the Australian Music Vault collection at the Arts Centre Melbourne.
