Abbot Point,from where mining giant Adani plans to ship coal overseas,is about 100 kilometres north of Airlie Beach.
If the plan is successful,the area would be home to the state's first commercial launch site.
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert said the next phase would involve"detailed technical and due diligence on the proposed site".
“If the findings are positive,the next stages include market sounding and wider public consultation,"she said.
“There will be targeted consultation with key stakeholders as part of this first stage due diligence process."
The state government's $8 million space strategy,launched this year,found"ideal latitude,clear skies and open waters to the east means that Queensland can launch larger payloads,and into more orbits,than any other place in Australia".
"Queensland has a comparable latitude to Cape Canaveral,Florida,which hosts the Kennedy Space Centre,one of the world’s busiest launch sites,"the strategy notes.
