Justify became the most recent winner of America's Triple Crown (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes) in 2018.
Coolmore believes he has the potential to succeed ageing super sire Galileo as the pre-eminent stallion in world racing.
"I think it was fairly well accepted that in different times[pre-COVID-19] she would have broken the Australian record of $5 million, but these are not different times and as a result the $4.2 million she made was still considered a fabulous price,"said Bester.
"Coolmore was determined to get her because she was one of the most spectacular mares to go through the sale ring in the past decade,"he added, pointing out that as a two-year-old,Sunlight was precocious enough to win the Magic Millions juvenile race but also good enough to train on at three to beat the colts in the group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes during the Melbourne Cup carnival the following spring. In the autumn, she defeated the older colts and geldings in the Newmarket Handicap, another group 1 contest.
"She had an extraordinary physique and a very deep pedigree so that mix of pedigree, performance and physique – the holy trinity, the three Ps we call them,is almost irresistible,"Bester said.
"Coolmore has been on a mission for the past two years around the world to find the very best mares for Justify both in the northern hemisphere and in the southern hemisphere. Coolmore has collected a portfolio of broodmares second to none ... and Sunlight forms just one of the best book in the southern hemisphere that any stallion has yet covered."
