"If you look at some of the other national anthems[like New Zealand],they start off Maori and they go into their English version. I reckon you do the Aboriginal version and then follow it with the English version."

Beale, who championed for the creation of an Indigenous Wallabies jersey, was also a fan watching on from France.

"This was special,"he wrote on Instagram.

Mitchell had a dissenting view, however. The Souths fullback has been vocal in the past about his opposition to the Australian national anthem, and along with other Indigenous players, has refused to sing it.

He posted an Instagram story with the caption:"When will people understand that changing it to language doesn't change the meaning",before a facepalm emoji.

“Be proud but understand what you’re being proud of,"the caption continued.

“I stand for us,our mob! Be proud of the oldest living culture.

“Always was,always will be.”

Mitchell has since deleted the post.

The Indigenous lyrics used at the rugby, which has also been sung by Indigenous groups such as the KARI Singers at other sporting events in previous years, are not a direct translation of Advance Australia Fair.

Asked about Mitchell's remark,Ella said:"He’s got every right to put his opinions across. There’s no issue with what he’s said. I just thought it was a good initiative to do it in language. There is no right or wrong answer here but I thought it was a good initiative by Rugby Australia."

Players spent a number of hours during the week learning the words and did not hold back on the field.

Fox has performed the anthem before at Randwick matches at Coogee Oval and earlier this year did so at the launch of Australia's First Nations jersey.

"We were practising (the language version) during the week and our guys were – there was never a question – proud to have the opportunity to do it,"Wallabies captain Michael Hooper said post-match.

"I think it sounded pretty good, too. Wearing an Indigenous jersey and singing that in Aboriginal and then English,it was great and it was great to be a part of."

Hooper was non-committal when asked if he would like the Eora part of the anthem to be sung at every Wallabies match, but if the reaction to Fox's rendition is any guide,Rugby Australia should certainly consider it.

Inspirational Australian Paralympian Kurt Fearnley labelled Fox's rendition"very, very impressive",while former Wallabies star Matt Giteau applauded the Wallabies for taking the sport forward.

Australian netballer Kim Green went so far as saying:"This is the BEST Australian sporting moment I have ever seen."

NSW cricketer Trent Copeland was bursting with pride when sharing his thoughts on the anthem, while another former Test cricketer in Ed Cowan wrote on Twitter:"Hoping we look back at this moment in years to come as one of the moments that we made a leap forward as a country."
