March 27 will mark 17 years since Cr Moore was elected as lord mayor in 2004. At that time, she was also the state MP for the seat of Bligh, later renamed Sydney - a role she held until 2012 when the state government forced her to choose between the two.
Cr Moore is asking voters for a historic fifth term in Town Hall. If successful,by the time she completes it she will have served longer than Robert Menzies was prime minister or Joh Bjelke-Petersen was the premier of Queensland.
In an interview withThe Sun-Herald,Cr Moore rejected criticism from rivals and predecessor Frank Sartor suggesting she had been in the job too long.
“We’ve been doing new things every year,” she said. She noted in the time she has been lord mayor,Sydneysiders have seen seven state premiers and seven changes of prime minister, and asked:“Have any of those people brought new, fantastic ideas?”
Cr Moore has had a stranglehold on power since she was elected, maintaining a majority on council and winning more than 50 per cent of the vote.
This year at least two experienced women will run against her:doctor and former Moore ally Kerryn Phelps, and long-serving Labor councillor Linda Scott.
