Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty on Saturday said investigators were closely considering the conflicts within and between organised crime networks as a possible motive for the shooting.
“We can’t discount that. I can say that the 22-year-old male ... is known to police, but not well known. There are some links to the Alameddine organised crime network, however that’s only one line of inquiry,” he said.
“We also can’t discount this could be an internal conflict between an organised crime network”.
Some members of the Alameddine family have been involved in adangerous tit-for-tat conflict with the Hamzy gang – tensions that allegedlyescalated with a suspected theft of drugs and assault.
It is alleged Mr Kanj was in a vehicle driving through Chester Hill,in Sydney’s lockdown west, around 11.10pm when he was struck by a bullet. Police believe he was then driven to the nearby suburb of Guildford.
A separate bullet allegedly struck another 25-year-old man in another car,who police say was an “innocent bystander” watching sport on a phone with a friend.
Police were called to Boundary Road,Chester Hill, where they found the 25-year-old bystander with minor injuries after being grazed with a bullet. Paramedics attended and treated the man before taking him to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
