Former South African batsman and ex-SuperSport commentator Darryl Cullinan felt Kohli should be punished by the International Cricket Council.

“If anything it was a mistake, someone made a mistake. I cannot believe they would think along those sorts of lines, that’s just out of line,” Cullinan told ESPNcricinfo.

“For too long Virat has got away with behaviour that is unacceptable on a cricket field, but he’s Virat Kohli.”

Former South African captain Shaun Pollock said the “Indians went over the top”.

“Hawk-eye is something you rely on for decision-making. It’s an independent body. They do their level best with everything they have got. They have got their own cameras. I can understand the disappointment because they wanted the wicket but I think they went over the top a little bit,” Pollock said.

Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir also criticised Kohli. “It’s worst for an Indian captain to say like this in stumps. By doing this you will never be an idol to youngsters,” Gambhir told Star Sports

The incident happened at the scene ofthe infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal, when SuperSport captured vision of Australian batter Cameron Bancroft shoving a piece of sandpaper down his pants. The Australians’ behaviour resulted in lengthy suspensions for Bancroft,Steve Smith and David Warner.
