The Perrottet government last year announced a review into the city’s tolling regime, which is set to be a key issue at the 2023 state election as the opposition sharpens its focus on cost of living pressures in Sydney.
NSW Treasury deputy secretary Philip Gardner said the range of options were being canvassed as part of a review that would be presented to Macquarie Street in the second half of this year.
“We’ll be providing a full range of options to the government,so it is something that could be considered and put forward as an option for the government, yes,” Mr Gardner said when asked whether a cap on tolls was part of the review.
A two-way charge for the Harbour Bridge and Tunnel,on which a toll is currently only paid on southbound journeys, will also be considered.
TheHeraldlast year revealed then-treasurer Dominic Perrottetintervened in plans to charge tolls in both directions of the harbour crossings, given the political implications of introducing new fees for motorists.
The tolling structure of the two existing harbour crossings will need to align with the future Western Harbour Tunnel - which is set to open in 2027.
